A more equitable world is possible when we put people and our planet first.
We believe we can make the world a more beautiful place by holding ourselves to a higher ethical standard. We call it being “ethically elevated.” It means we put artistry above efficiency. Fair wages above profits. Sustainability above mass production. Quality craftsmanship above mindless consumption. And transparency above everything, as we painstakingly hand-select only the most beautifully-designed, ethically-made goods that put people and our planet first.
And because there’s nothing uglier than unfairness, hidden practices or trickery, we pledge to provide true transparency about the ethically made goods we offer. So you can shop freely, knowing each piece has been responsibly sourced, and expertly handcrafted with sustainable materials. And that the makers and artisans were paid fair wages.
It’s a lofty vision we hope to achieve. But together we can realize it one beautiful, ethical piece at a time.
We're a woman-owned company empowering small businesses
Cayley Pater and Andy Ives thought shopping for ethical and sustainable home goods should be simple. So in 2018, they created Made Trade and brought the best ethically made and sustainably sourced goods to one place.
On Made Trade, you can shop with confidence knowing every product we carry is rigorously assessed and verified for both sustainability and equity and adheres to at least two of Made Trade's eight core values.
How we verify and vet our products
We verify and vet every product we carry to ensure it meets our core values of equity, sustainability, and transparency.
Each of the 130+ brands, small businesses, makers, and artisan collectives we partner with goes through an extensive application process where we collect detailed information about their products, manufacturing process, labor conditions, materials, fair trade status, third party verifications and much, much more. We conduct such thorough reviews of the products we carry so we can provide true transparency to our customers.
Our application process includes reviewing sustainable sourcing of materials, verifying safe working conditions, and ensuring everyone along the supply chain is paid a livable wage. Many of the products we carry are made in workshops or factories that have third party certifications that verify sustainability of the materials, fair wages, and/or working conditions, which you'll find listed on the product page.
We pledge to provide true transparency about the ethically made goods we offer. So you can shop freely, knowing each piece has been responsibly sourced, and expertly crafted with sustainable materials.
Our Values
On Made Trade, you can shop with confidence knowing every product we carry is rigorously verified and vetted for sustainable sourcing and fair labor practices. Each product must also adhere to at least two of Made Trade's eight core values:
Fair Trade
Fair Trade products carried on Made Trade are handmade outside the United States and adhere to international Fair Trade guidelines and labor practices, and are verified or certified by a third party such as the World Fair Trade Organization, Fair Trade Federation or Fair Trade Certified. The makers and artisans employed were paid a living wage and are provided safe and healthy working conditions. Whenever possible, the materials sourced are local to the region where the product was manufactured and eco-friendly practices were used in the manufacturing process. Made Trade works with brands who are fair trade certified, follow fair trade guidelines or even exceed them, however this value will only appear on products where the brand has been certified or verified by a third party.
Shop Fair TradeHandcrafted
Handcrafted products are made by hand by makers and artisans in the United States and around the world. Often, these are products made using slow processes and generations-old traditional techniques or art forms that are in decline or in danger of being lost forever.
Shop HandcraftedMade in USA
This product was responsibly made in the United States. At Made Trade it's not enough for a product to just be "USA made," it must also adhere to responsible sourcing of materials used and fair pay and safe working conditions of the person(s) who created it. Made Trade only curates USA made brands who pay fair and living wages to their makers; provide safe and healthy working conditions; source materials locally wherever possible; prioritize sustainable growth for their business, and implement eco-friendly practices.
Shop Made in USABIPOC Owned
BIPOC Owned products come from a business, company or non-profit where 51% or more of the company who makes the product is owned or run by a Black, Indigenous, or Person(s) of Color. Diversity is often hard to come by in the ethical fashion and conscious consumerism space. Made Trade feels it is crucial we allow our customers to search for and easily find products and brands that are BIPOC-Owned. Celebrating diversity and highlighting underrepresented communities in business is core to Made Trade’s mission.
Shop BIPOC OwnedSustainable Materials
At Made Trade, products made with Sustainable Materials are made with earth-friendly and responsibly harvested raw materials like GOTS Certified Organic Cotton, linen, and hemp. These products are intentionally designed to create minimal environmental impact.
Shop Sustainable MaterialsRecycled / Upcycled
Recycled and Upcycled products are made from materials that would otherwise be discarded — including products made from recycled plastics, manufacturing byproducts like upcycled bamboo sawdust, recycled glass, and deadstock fabrics.
Shop Recycled / UpcycledVegan
This product contains zero animal products or byproducts. At Made Trade we only curate vegan products from brands that use natural materials as sustainably as possible, do not use polyurethane or other synthetic faux leather materials (and use alternatives like plant-based faux leathers, such as Piñatex or mushroom leather), and implement fair business practices with their suppliers and their employees.
Shop VeganWomen Owned
This product is from a women-owned business — meaning at least 51% of the company or non-profit who makes this product is owned or run by individual(s) identifying as women. Celebrating diversity and highlighting underrepresented communities in business is core to Made Trade’s mission.
